NOSTAGIAFEST SPORTSMAN RACING
FRI & SAT, JUNE 26 & 27

With a lot of attention being focused on the professional cars at the NostalgiaFest on June 26 & 27, attention also needs to be with the sportsman cars as well. "What is neat and unique about this event is that the sportsman cars are period correct and really make for a neat presentation" said Scott Gardner.

The NPCA has their index classes (open to all competitors) as well as a bracket class (1983 & older no-box) vehicles and front engine dragsters. "We set the vehicle age limit for the bracket class based on the standard term of 25 years being considered a classic car. As we get older and time goes on, the age cut off of these cars goes up" continued Gardner. The bracket class will have time trials and eliminations each day (Friday and Saturday). The NPCA classes and Nostalgia Super Stocks will time trial and qualify on Friday and Saturday with final eliminations on Saturday as well. For complete details on the NostalgiaFest sportsman classes click here.

HIGH SCHOOL POINTS RETURN TO FRIDAY FUN NIGHT PLUS BUSY WEEKEND ON TAP

After an early in the season rain-out it is time for the High School Points Class to debut this Friday, June 5 along with the Rev-Hard Fun Night. "We lost the first High School Points Race of the season to rain" said Scott Gardner. Gates open at 5:30 PM with test-n-tune underway at 6 PM. Eliminations for the High School class, regular Trophy and gamblers will be shortly after 8 PM.

On Saturday (June 6) it will Bracket Points Race #5. "The bracket series has been really strong this season, mentioned Gardner, which makes the points program extremely competitive." Gates open Saturday at 2 PM. Then on Sunday it's the DSM Drag Central Club with open racing for everyone from 12 Noon until 4 PM.

MAJOR CHANGE MADE TO SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Even with the best planning sometimes change is required. In this case it involves two events on the 2009 Cordova Dragway Park Schedule of Events. The first is the postponement of the “Set if Off Drags” originally scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2009. “The club who was hosting this event just couldn’t make the numbers work at this time” said Scott Gardner, “They hope in the future to be able to re-schedule to another date.” He continued.

Replacing the “Set if Off Drags” on June 13 will be a Cordova Dragway Park produced event that includes a $2,000 to win High-Roller Bracket Race and more. “We have decided to move the $2,000 All-Brands Hi-Roller from NostalgiaFest on June 27 to Saturday, June 13. “With the number of nostalgia racers expressing interest in racing at the NostalgiaFest, we felt it would be best to move the all-brands, all age group cars and dragsters to the new open date and adjust the NostalgiaFest line-up to fit a more purist form” Gardner concluded.

MOTORCYCLE POINTS STARTS STRONG

SLIGHT PROGRAM ADJUSTMENTS MADE FOR UPCOMING RACES

The new motorcycle class and points program that is conducted on select Friday evenings has started strong with 24 entries at the first event on Friday, May 22. Dan Beale took his no-box bike to the class win stopping box racer Tom Klemme in the final.

The next motorcycle points & money race is this Friday, May 29. "After evaluating the number of bikes and how the program is working, we have decided to make some subtle adjustments" said Track Operator Scott Gardner. Beginning with the race this Friday, May 29 we will have one official qualifying session at 7:30 PM (prox) for the money bikes. Should any of the money bike racers want additional time runs before the official qualifying session, they may make those runs in the regular test-n-tune lanes in line with everyone else. We believe this will eliminate confusion in the lanes as well as keep the test-n-tune lanes available to everyone. Eliminations for the money bike class will be in-line with the trophy and gamblers classes.

Cross-talk will continue to be used on the box side of the ladder. It is however, shut-off for the no-box/street bike side. Once all bikes are merged together, cross-talk will remain activated. Should a racer not want cross-talk on the box side eliminations or once the class is merged, they must put an "N" behind their DIAL-IN.

THE PERFECT PICTURE OF CONSISTENTCY

Brown Tames the Quarter-Mile using a 6.94, 6.94, 6.95, 6.95, 6.94, 6.99 & 6.95 to win Super Pro at Cordova Dragway Park

No one dared to tell Hank Brown that a supercharged 200 mile-n-hour dragster might not be best combination to win the Super Pro class on a 45 degree Saturday Night, as he wouldn’t have listened anyway.

After making two time trials during the cool and blistery afternoon this past Saturday (May 9) at Cordova Dragway Park (Cordova, IL), Brown served quick notice that he was a serious threat to win the highly contested Super Pro ET Bracket Eliminator. However, conditions would become even more challenging as evening temperatures dropped into the 40’s during eliminations.

Brown continued to make believers out of the racers in his class; the fans and track officials who watched him flawlessly (and seemingly easily) win 5 rounds of racing in a short 3 hour period to take the Super Pro class win. “My dragster performed exceptionally well tonight as we flirted continually with the 200 mile per hour mark taking round after round” said Brown.

The win had meaning more than a trophy and a check as his sponsor from the Truck Country Company was in attendance at the event. Brown defeated Tom Klemme in the final who drove the Beale-Klemme dragster to the runner-up finish.

“We were honored once again to be the site of this demonstration”, said Jim “Tazz” Hines with CDP, “If this helps prevent any of our youth being injured or God forbid, killed, by the stupid act of drinking and driving, everyone involved has done their job today”.

RIVER'S TESTING NEW PRO-STOCK FOR NHRA NATIONALS

Dave River from Maquoketa, IA brought his new Pro-Stock Chevrolet Colbalt to Cordova Dragway Park, Cordova, Illinois on Thursday, April 23 for testing in preparation for his debut at the NHRA O'Reilly's Midwest Nationals in St. Louis. "We know how competitive the Pro-Stock class is with most teams having full time employees dedicated to their operations" said River, "Our team is family based and this is something I have always wanted to try and we will give it our best."

FORECAST LOOKING BETTER FOR OPENING WEEKEND

As of Thursday evening April 16 the forecast has been improving for a least the first half of the opening weekend, April 18 & 19. "It appears the rain will hold off until evening on Saturday which would be perfect for our Saturday opening event" said Scott Gardner.
We will post live updates concerning any weather issues as the weekend proceeds.

The NHRA Chassis Certifications will take place rain or shine on Sunday as there is a building on the grounds that can be used for the inspections should it rain.

SAFETY ARRESTING SYSTEM COMPLETED

A new Safety Arresting System has been completed at Cordova Dragway Park, Cordova, Illinois. The system was built from recommendations provided by the NHRA and Track Planning Associates. “Hopefully this will ensure the safety of the racers as we continue to be dedicated to providing a facility at the highest level” said Track Operator Scott Gardner.
The Safety Arresting System eliminates the use of a sand trap run-off area and replaces that with 600 tons of washed pea-gravel. In addition, concrete barrier walls have been installed on each side of the area to prevent an out of control race car from leaving the controlled section.

Cordova Dragway Park plans to also install a catch net at the very end of the safety structure during the course of the 2009 season.

LEGENDARY CAR OWNER ROLAND LEONG NAMED GRAND MARSHALL FOR NOSTALGIAFEST

Roland Leong, the Hawaii-born road warrior of Nitro Funny Car racing has been named as Grand Marshall of the NostalgiaFest of Drag Racing event (an NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Affiliate) on Friday and Saturday, June 26-27, 2009 at Cordova Dragway Park (Cordova, Illinois).

Leong, who has been noted as one of the most successful tuner owners in the business with his fabled “Hawaiian Funny Cars” is also known as having the most drivers in a 30-year span. The one thing that did remain consistent was the success they enjoyed on the race tracks.

Joining Leong at the NostalgiaFest event will be former Hawaiian Funny Car drivers Larry Reyes and Ron Colson.

Reyes was the first driver behind the wheel of a Hawaiian Funny Car as previous entries were Top Fuel Dragsters. Reyes drove the ill-handling “Charger” in 1969 and 1970. Ron Colson took over driving chores of the Hawaiian after previously driving the Chi-Town Hustler in 1976. Leong and Colson enjoyed much success winning the 1978 NHRA Fall Nationals and 1980 NHRA World Finals, ultimately finishing third in points that season.
Colson retired full time from driving the Hawaiian Funny Car 1980 and filled in for ESPN’s Mike Dunn at match races in the early 80’s.

To make the NostalgiaFest even more spectacular there will be a display of the 40th Anniversary Hawaiian and Chi-Town Hustler Funny Cars courtesy of Greg Mosley. “This will be so cool” said Track Operator Scott Gardner, “to have both of these Funny Cars on display along with Roland and a couple of his drivers are fantastic.”

The NostalgiaFest is an NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Affiliate event and will include the Drag Racing Online Nitro Funny Car category, Top Fuel Dragsters, Nitro Altereds, Gassers and more.
